Mice don't like peppermint, so you might try putting peppermint oil along the inside bottom of your shed. Also, they can gnaw straight through metal, so when you setup your shed buy some metal flashing in a roll. Then, tack it on to the entire bottom edge of the shed, all-the-way-around before you've painted the shed. After painting the shed, you won't even consideration the flashing; but it will keep out the mice and rats.

Remember that a rat can crawl straight through a gap about as wide as your wee finger and a mouse can shove straight through a crack as small as a thin magazine. So keep the clearance between the door and the floor and the door to the walls at a minimum. They can't climb flat expanses of wall, so you're safe when it's above about ten inches.
Generally, the way that you can tell that you have rats or mice are by their droppings. Not only do they stink, but they are dark brown and round wee balls that are from an eighth of an inch for mice to a half-inch in size for rats. They kind of feel like Rice Crispies.
